The paper is concerned with the definitions, the dimensions and the indicators related to the assessment of the external effectiveness of higher education. The paper begins with a remark on the close relationship between the methodological choices for assessing effectiveness and the possible uses of the obtained measures in an educational entity (study programme, faculty, athenaeum). We will present, in particular (i.) the requirements of quality assurance, educational accreditation, Bologna Process and accountability, as possible aims; (ii.) the dimensions of graduates’ returns to the local economy and communities and to the wider society and the indicators apt to measure these dimensions; (iii.) a synopsis that connects the effectiveness measures with their possible uses.
