The debate on the managerial approaches and public policies for Knowledge-Intensive Business Services (KIBS) is still ongoing. A possible problem is that many studies are based on traditional sectorial taxonomies like e.g. NACE. These may fail to provide consistent information about knowledge management characteristics, which should be a central feature of KIBS. This paper aims to develop an innovative classification of KIBS based on their knowledge-based features and knowledge management approaches. This classification derives from a cluster analysis performed on a sample of 375 KIBS companies located in the Northeast of Italy. The taxonomy highlights regularities and common features of companies more effectively than the traditional ones, and can allow to better address managerial and policy issues.
