This essay provides a detailed analysis of use- and user-related variation in the narratives of the two protagonists in John Fowles's The Collector. The study is conducted on the basis of Leech and Short's analysis in Style in Fiction and Fowler's linguistic criticism. The features outlined in the original text are then compared and contrasted with the Italian translation of the novel in order to describe strategies and problems inherent in rendering variation in Italian in the 1960s and provide suggestions for improvement based on studies of spoken and informal Italian.

Abstract

This essay provides a detailed analysis of use- and user-related variation in the narratives of the two protagonists in John Fowles's The Collector. The study is conducted on the basis of Leech and Short's analysis in Style in Fiction and Fowler's linguistic criticism. The features outlined in the original text are then compared and contrasted with the Italian translation of the novel in order to describe strategies and problems inherent in rendering variation in Italian in the 1960s and provide suggestions for improvement based on studies of spoken and informal Italian.
