To demonstrate a fast and non-destructive technique to monitor the bonding properties of in service wood structures, Southern Yellow Pine (Pinus sp.) and Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) weathered wood surfaces were characterized using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The wood samples were artificially weathered during seven different exposure periods. The bonding strength of aged wood specimens glued with Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) was tested following ASTM D-5868-01. Using the multivariate analysis tools (principal component analysis, PCA, and projection to latent structure, PLS), NIR spectra were correlated with the maximal peak stress values obtained during mechanical tests. To support the results and to understand better the adhesion phenomena of weathered wood, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) imaging technique was used to characterize the bonding line.

Abstract
To support the results and to understand better the adhesion phenomena of weathered wood, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) imaging technique was used to characterize the bonding line.Pubblicazioni consigliate
