Arnica montana is used in traditional and homeopathic medicine for its antiseptic, antiphlogistic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Three wild accessions (B. G. Paradisia-Aosta, Monte Bondone and Malga Juribello-Trento) were compared in an experimental trial carried out for two years in the neighbourhood of Trento (Italy). The quali-quantitative analyses of the different samples were done by HPLC-MS and HPLC-DAD methods. The main constituents were caffeic acid derivatives (3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 1,5-dicaffeoyl-3- methoxyoxaloilquinic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoyl-1- methoxyoxaloylquinic acid, 1,4,5- tricaffeoyl-3-methoxyoxaloylquinic acid), flavonoids (kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside and derivatives) and the sesquiterpene lactones helenalin, dihydroelenalin and their esters derivatives. The total content of flavonoids, phenolic acids and sesquiterpene lactones varied in the Arnica accessions from 0.70 to 1.42%, 0.62 to 1.53% and 0.54 to 1.50%, respectively. © WIETE 2012.
