High-risk human papilloma virus (hr-HPV) genital infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection among women. A correlation between hr-HPV infection and cervical cancer is evident, because HPV can be detected in more than 99% of cervical cancers (the second most common female cancer worldwide) 1 and 2. HPV infection can also increase the rate of preneoplastic and neoplastic genital lesions. Among hr-HPV serotypes, HPV 16 and 18 are responsible for most cervical cancers that are invasive. Low-risk HPV serotypes 6 and 11 are associated with 90% of all genital warts.
