The paper provides a comparison between Zaharija Orfelin’s Slaveno-serbski Magazin (the first Serbian magazine, published in Venice in 1768) and 18th century European literary journals, as regards its formal features, structure and contents. The analysis focuses on literary periodicals and general-interest magazines which were published in Venice in the second half of the 18th century, particularly Gasparo Gozzi’s La Gazzetta Veneta, Giuseppe Baretti’s La Frusta Letteraria, Francesco Griselini’s Magazzino Italiano and Domenico and Elisabetta’s Caminer Il Giornale Enciclopedico. The main model for these periodicals was provided by 18th century English Magazines and The Spectator, which were very popular in Venice at the time. The aim of this paper is to enrich the image of the first Serbian magazine, as well as to confirm its ground-breaking role in the history of Serbian journalism and national culture.
