The paper examines various alternatives for the protection of the RFX capacitor bank and converter system units against fault conditions resulting from anomalous behaviour of the switches operating in the machine circuits, insulation breakdowns in the machine windings or sudden termination of the plasma current. In particular the merits of two solutions are compared; the first one uses ZnO Non Linear Resistors (NLR) with series diodes and the second one employs thyristor crowbars with series resistors
