The primary purpose of the proposed invention is to disclose a new class of electrolytes for primary and secondary energy storage devices including batteries, supercapacitors and other types of power sources. The electrolytes considered herein are based on ionic liquids (IL) doped with aluminum salts (AlY3) and salts of alkali or alkaline earth metals (MZ or MZ2). The general formula for this class of electrolytes is IL•(ZRnXq-n)v•(MYm)w, where Z is Al, B, P, Sb, or As, R is an organic radical (alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, phenyl, benzyl, amido), X and Y are alogens (F, Cl, Br, I), M is an alkali or alkaline metal (including Li, Mg), n=0-4, q=4, m=1-2, v=0-3 and w=0-3 Other additives may be included in the mixture such as phosphorus oxides or phosphorus sulfides. The ionic liquid can be substituted by mixtures of TiCl4 and TiCl3. Prototype embodiments consist of ionic liquids doped with AlCl3 or organoalluminate compounds and amorphous alkaline or alkali earth metal salts.
