Marco Besso’s paremiological collection is a linguistic database that can be used for developing lexicon-grammar descriptions, as well as new classifications and analyses. This paper examines a small ad hoc diachronic corpus (17th to 20th cent.) of 158 French proverbs with the verb valoir from this collection. We chose two kinds of impersonal constructions, i.e. Mieux vaut and Il vaut mieux (Mieux vaut tard que jamais, Il vaut mieux tard que jamais), and developed lexicon-grammar tables which give a concise analysis of the proverbs selected.
