Background / Purpose: To investigate the reversal of direction that occurs in the Poggendorff illusion when the diagonal is formed by subjective contours. We assess directly where the diagonal appears to intersect the rectangle, by asking subjects to mark the relevant spot(s). Main conclusion: For the acute angle edge of the diagonal there is no illusion, but for the obtuse angle side the marks were significantly more offset both horizontally and vertically. This eliminates the spatial blurring, angle misperception and assimilation theories of the Poggendorff, in this context. Next steps: To assess local versus global processing in the reversed Poggendorff illusion.

Abstract
Background / Purpose: To investigate the reversal of direction that occurs in the Poggendorff illusion when the diagonal is formed by subjective contours. We assess directly where the diagonal appears to intersect the rectangle, by asking subjects to mark the relevant spot(s). Main conclusion: For the acute angle edge of the diagonal there is no illusion, but for the obtuse angle side the marks were significantly more offset both horizontally and vertically. This eliminates the spatial blurring, angle misperception and assimilation theories of the Poggendorff, in this context. Next steps: To assess local versus global processing in the reversed Poggendorff illusion.Pubblicazioni consigliate
