Uric acid and cardiac performance

Uric acid is a molecule at the crossroad of the purine, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolisms. This issue of Internal and Emergency Medicine contains a paper from the Brisighella Heart Study by Cicero and co-workers reporting an interesting observation about uric acid and some markers of myocardial function. All the considerations do not impair the relevance of the results reported by Cicero et al. but on the contrary, highlight the need for further research about uric acid and cardiac performance, about the role of xanthine oxidase in health and diseases, and about the effects of the genetic background on purine metabolism
