One of the main objectives of WP4 in NEWFOREX project is to derive suggestions and recommendations to policy‐ and decision‐makers concerning the use of market‐based mechanisms for internalising forest externalities and to provide insights into the most adequate design of such mechanisms. Deliverable 4.1. compiled the information on the existing market‐based mechanisms related to the four key externalities of the project – biodiversity, water, carbon and recreation ‐ in the six case studies. Selected market‐based mechanisms from the case studies are studied in‐depth using an institutional analysis framework to identify and analyse preconditions for their application in different ecological and socio‐economic contexts, as well as to detect challenges, problems and/or success factors in their design and implementation. The institutional analysis is complemented by the analysis of the buyers’ opinions regarding who should pay for the provision of ecosystem services (implemented as part of the valuation surveys in 2011) and of forest owners’ attitudes towards market‐based mechanisms (implemented as part of the forest owners surveys in 2012‐2013). These results constitute the core part of Deliverable D4.3.
