The article examines how humorous effects in some works by authors connected to the city of Danzig encourages reflection on the part of the reader. Above all, attention is paid to those instances where humour is used to describe inter-ethnic relations in the period of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. The author concentrates her attention particularly on the prose works of Paweł Huelle and Stefan Chwin. The analysis of a few examples shows how the use of humour is not a merely aesthetic choice, but also influences the way the reader reacts. Humour questions the commonly accepted axiology, modifying not only one’s judgement of characters and events, but also the basis on which those judgements are made. In this way the authors redefine their identities on a new basis and stimulate the reader to do likewise.
