This paper is aimed at devising a taxonomy of indicators that can be used to assess the external effectiveness of graduates’ education in order to enhance decision making at universities and in the political and social world. Eleven indicators related to external effectiveness were selected and their reliability and relevance in representing the concept of effectiveness analysed. The data were drawn from a longitudinal survey carried out from 2008 to 2011 at the University of Padua, Italy, on a sample of its graduates. Our analyses highlighted that it is easier to exclude some indicators than to pinpoint those that best represent the external effectiveness of the study programmes. However, effectiveness seems to be a multidimensional concept, but its dimensions are likely to depend on the surveyed category of stakeholders
