This work is aimed at processing of satellite data and GIS for spatial definition of greatest seismic hazard and landslide risk. The study area covers some of the municipalities in the province of Teramo involved in the event of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake: Arsita, Basciano, Bisenti, Castel Castagna, Castelli, Castiglione Messer Raimondo, Cellino Attanasio, Cermignano, Colledara, Fano Adriano, Farindola, Isola del Gran Sasso, Montefino, Montorio al Vomano, Penna S. Andrea, Pietracamela and Tossicia. The study area was selected because, despite having recorded a strong earthquake intensity, these marginal areas have been neglected in studies assessing regional-scale geological and geomorphological issues. The study was conducted with the support of a satellite image Landsat ETM September 2006, from Global Land Cover Facility (glcf.umiacs.umd.edu). The satellite scene was processed using the image processing software to extract thematic data and morphological characteristics as the basis for display in a GIS environment using open source software Qgis (http://www.qgis.org/).
