The paper discusses the role of material culture in shaping social representations of women and work. A study of the stereotype of the employed woman was conducted through an experiment whose design features the integration of visual techniques and quantitative techniques. Four photos depicting four different styles of clothing on a female model were shown to a sample of 739 young people aged 19–25 years who reside in the Veneto region of Italy. Statistical analysis of the findings clearly demonstrate the existence of the stereotype of the employed woman. This stereotype differs from the others represented by three of the pictures, in terms of both lifestyle and the characteristics of the semantic differential measured.
