Sellars’ definition of the “history of philosophy” has become famous: philosophy is the lingua franca for making communication between philosophers possible. As it is widely acknowledged, Sellars’ philosophy plays a central role in many areas of today’s debates – from philosophy of mind to theory of perception, and from theories of concepts to theories of action – and most of his more insightful views were developed in close dialogue with the history of philosophy: above all in relation to Kant but also to Descartes, Leibniz, Wittgenstein, etc. These figures not only served as a form of inspiration but also offered insights crucial for developing his own perspective. Sellars, in turn, opened up new ways of understanding classical texts of the modern philosophical tradition by applying his powerful conceptual apparatus to their thoughts and texts. This volume aims to explore Sellars’ relationship to the history of philosophy and its potential for today’s concerns by closely examining his rapport with the classical thinkers of modern and contemporary philosophy (Descartes, Hume, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Frege, Wittgenstein, Peirce, American Realism, Carnap etc.) and by illuminating how Sellars re-oriented their ideas toward contemporary concerns. Readers will discover Sellars’ original take on these thinkers and explore how Sellars connects topics from classical thinkers to the contemporary debate, often in a very original manner.
