This article focuses on some emerging and significant categories: unaccompanied children and unaccompanied refugee minors. They are children in emergencies, who are separated from their families during wars, political crisis and refugee movements. Even though they are clearly a vulnerable group, we know very little about their specific situation and needs due to a predominant legal perspective on these youths, considering them as ‘migrants’ and ‘refugees’, not as ‘children’. It is necessary to adopt a pedagogical perspective: it allows us to better understand who these children are and to consider their complicated situations in relation to their ambitions, desires and educational potentialities. This does not concern us only as educators, but as society as a whole, as it aims to encourage the satisfaction of children’s developmental needs and the protection of their rights.
