In transportation lifelines, bridges are the most vulnerable elements and they can experience structural problems due to environmental conditions and natural disasters. With reference to seismic risk, several studies were proposed in literature dealing with the risk assessment of bridge networks, recently taking also into account ageing as one of the main factors affecting seismic vulnerability of existing bridges. The aim of this work is to assess direct losses to a portfolio of existing bridges, and their evolution in time, taking into account deterioration as influencing parameter in the definition of bridges’ seismic vulnerability.

Abstract

In transportation lifelines, bridges are the most vulnerable elements and they can experience structural problems due to environmental conditions and natural disasters. With reference to seismic risk, several studies were proposed in literature dealing with the risk assessment of bridge networks, recently taking also into account ageing as one of the main factors affecting seismic vulnerability of existing bridges. The aim of this work is to assess direct losses to a portfolio of existing bridges, and their evolution in time, taking into account deterioration as influencing parameter in the definition of bridges’ seismic vulnerability.
