The fatigue resistance in the presence of cracks or sharp V-notches can be calculated by means of energetic approaches, such as the Strain Energy Density (SED) over a control volume of radius Rc, which depends on the material properties. In the present work, the critical radius of heavy section ductile irons has been evaluated by means of fatigue tests on specimens containing defects. Moreover, a narrow SED-based scatter band is able to summarize the fa- tigue behaviours of different ductile irons.

Abstract
