Abstract

As librarian in Vienna’s court library in the 17th-century, Peter Lambeck was a member of the so-called Republic of Letters. While political fortunes were still controlled by the European monarchs, a loose association of intellectuals formed, which was networked across national borders. Historian Dr. Vittoria Feola examines the career of Peter Lambeck as a case study of a typical European academic career. As an 18-year-old student Lambeck arrived in Paris, then the centre of the Republic of Letters. Here he was given access to the royal library, coming into contact with what was probably the most important hub of academic research at the time. Dr. Feola sets out on Lambeck’s trail in present-day Paris.
