When in 1663 Peter Lambeck became librarian to the Habsburg Emperor, Vienna lay on the periphery of the Republic of Letters – isolated from the larger centres of Paris and Rome. One of the reasons for this was the political situation of the Habsburg monarchy under Leopold I. Academic books were very difficult to come by in Vienna and the court library was therefore very poorly equipped at the time. This meant its expansion presented Peter Lambeck with a considerable challenge. As historian Dr. Vittoria Feola can show, Lambeck did not turn to his contacts in France for help. Rather, an imperial diplomat and theologian in Venice proved to be an important source of books.
