The talk will focus on the main results of an Interview based Survey of 1st Year University Physics Students, carried out within the EU HOPE project. HOPE involves 71 partners from 31 European countries and is coordinated by Nadine Witkowski (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris), Ivan Ruddock (Strathclyde University, Glasgow) and Marisa Michelini (Università di Udine). Among HOPE activities, 112 interviews have been carried out in 16 universities, in order to investigate the factors that inspire the young people to study physics and to identify possible critical factors which can produce the dropping out.
