This paper proposes some general reflections about the concept of landscape - the central topic of the volume and the seminar from which the volume itself originates – dwells on some recent emphases that animate the national and international debate. First, we focus on the multifaceted definition of "landscape", from which different methods of analysis, assessment and intervention in "landscapes" derive. Secondly, the paper deals with some current research perspectives on the theme, in particular on the relationship between the concepts of landscape and heritage and the relationship between landscape and democracy, also in the light of the guiding principles proposed by the European Landscape Convention (Florence , 2000).
