The Italian economic depression of 2011–2015 has been attributed to austerity poli- cies politically enforced with the support of the German government and inspired by the principles of ordoliberalism. In the first part of this chapter, the roots of Italian liberalism are analysed and discussed in comparison to German liberalism. It will be highlighted how and who has been affected by ordoliberalism or had a theoreti- cal position close to it. Then, the political reception of liberal principles in Italy is briefly discussed. In the latter part of the chapter, the present-day discomfort with European policies and the German influence on them will be discussed, by looking at the scholars that have pointed to ordoliberalism (or to ‘the Germans ...’) as the cultural-political cause of austerity policies.
