In the essay, we intend to reflect upon the theme of encounter vis-à-vis the theme of forced migration, drawing our observations and analysis from two ethnographic studies based in a small town in the Veneto region, and in the city of Rome respectively. The case-studies will allow us to look at the encounter through the lens of two variables – food practices and agency – thus enlarging the scope of this analytical category.
