The paper analyses the suitability of a single-side axial flux permanent magnet generator (AFPMG) for high-speed small-scale applications. Its compact design, manufacturing simplicity and moderate high frequency losses are profitable for low-cost solutions, particularly to supply auxiliary loads in the automotive sector. The AFPMG mathematical model obtained by 3D finite element analyses is first verified by measurements on an existent prototype. Then, the electromagnetic performances of the generator, coupled to an uncontrolled rectifier in a current-source supply, are obtained by simulation in Matlab/Simulink®. An optimization procedure is set up to define the size of the compensating capacitors connected at the AFPMG terminals, leading to a remarkable performance enhancement considering the output power, the efficiency and the axial attractive force.
