The photosensitizing properties of triamcinolone acetonide have been studied through a panel of in vitro tests. The main target involved in phototoxicity by triamcinolone seems to be the cell membrane. The mechanism is oxygen-independent and is probably mediated by radicals which form on UV irradiation of the drug in solution. A photochemical study in water of buffered solutions support the occurring of a radical degradation, particularly when UVB is used. Three stable photoproducts have been isolated from and submitted to the toxicity same tests. They also proved to possess phototoxic properties and may thus contribute to the photosensitizing activity of triamcinolone in vivo
