This paper deals with the feasibility study of a high-torque low-speed Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor for a direct-drive cableway application. The typical choice for these applications are surface permanent magnet machines. However, rare-earth magnets are expensive and they would increase the machine cost too much. For this reason, PMAREL is investigated hereafter. Such machine represents a good candidate thanks to the low cost and the high efficiency of operation.

Abstract

This paper deals with the feasibility study of a high-torque low-speed Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor for a direct-drive cableway application. The typical choice for these applications are surface permanent magnet machines. However, rare-earth magnets are expensive and they would increase the machine cost too much. For this reason, PMAREL is investigated hereafter. Such machine represents a good candidate thanks to the low cost and the high efficiency of operation.
