The Neolithic of the lower Friulian Plain. Cultural, geoarchaeological and paleobotanic aspects – The extensive surface surveys carried out on the distal sector of the Friulian Plain allow to characterize the ancient Neolithic peopling. The first farmers mainly settled on the fluvial ridges formed during the Last Glacial Maximum, where the silty sandy soils are light and well drained. Thus, the settlements developed a linear pattern, constrained by the elongated direction of the fluvial ridges. In Piancada the stratigraphic investigations discovered a Neolithic ditch connected with other minor drainage structures, the burial of a young female, two lithic ateliers and several pits. A number of radiocarbon dates documents the early Neolithic chronology of this site, while the carpological and archaeozoologic analyses document the animal breeding and a rather complex agriculture.
