This essay aims to illustrate the potentialities and the use of a par- ticular type of source: the sea-protests of general average in the Med- iterranean space. The essay describes the source and its meaning in the historical context; then proposes some quantitative elaborations and some cases of qualitative nature, considered in the area of the Republic of Venice, to argue that the same source provides some important information for the maritime and the economic history.
