The health of citizens is obviously a primary factor when considering urban scenarios. Health factors can derive from various causes, included the same city environment (critical levels of pollution in some areas). In this research we develop a smart infrastructure, based on a budget-savvy sensor platform, able to automatically measure citizen health in a given zone by passively collecting information on the citizens. We show the effectiveness of the method by testing it within a large city environment, and analyse its various trade-offs and implications, showing how in fact the urban tissue is spatially related to the health of its inhabitants.

Abstract

The health of citizens is obviously a primary factor when considering urban scenarios. Health factors can derive from various causes, included the same city environment (critical levels of pollution in some areas). In this research we develop a smart infrastructure, based on a budget-savvy sensor platform, able to automatically measure citizen health in a given zone by passively collecting information on the citizens. We show the effectiveness of the method by testing it within a large city environment, and analyse its various trade-offs and implications, showing how in fact the urban tissue is spatially related to the health of its inhabitants.
