Emerging infectious diseases are a significant burden on global economies and public health and are increasing significantly. Many diseases that were efficiently controlled in the 1960’s (e.g. cholera, tuberculosis, typhoid, malaria, dengue, West Nile fever, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, plague) have re-emerged, causing major epidemics and have increased morbidity and mortality. Alarmingly, many new recognized diseases have recently arisen as major public health threats. These include HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, Bolivian, Argentine and Venezuelan hemorrhagic fevers, Nipah encephalitis, SARS, avian influenza, swine-origin influenza and a number of other viral, bacterial, and protozoal diseases transmitted by water, food and arthropod vectors. As we enter the 21st century, infectious diseases remain the most important cause of morbidity and mortality in the world.
