A large reuse of Roman bricks, originating from both religious and civil buildings, is typical to the « renaissance » of 12th century architecture in Padua, coming after the Early Medieval period. We looked into the dynamics and practice of the reuse of old materials by combining the study of construction techniques with statistical analyses of the brick’s dimension and modalities of their employment in the construction. Despite the variety of brick’s dimensions, the selection of reused materials in the studied constructions is characterized by intentional choice of the bricks of larger dimensions which are homogeneously distributed and used in equilibrium with static and construction needs.

Abstract
A large reuse of Roman bricks, originating from both religious and civil buildings, is typical to the « renaissance » of 12th century architecture in Padua, coming after the Early Medieval period. We looked into the dynamics and practice of the reuse of old materials by combining the study of construction techniques with statistical analyses of the brick’s dimension and modalities of their employment in the construction. Despite the variety of brick’s dimensions, the selection of reused materials in the studied constructions is characterized by intentional choice of the bricks of larger dimensions which are homogeneously distributed and used in equilibrium with static and construction needs.Pubblicazioni consigliate
