In the fatigue design context of welded components, the peak stress method (PSM) is a FE-oriented, rapid application of the approach based on notch stress intensity factors (NSIFs). This chapter provides a theoretical background of the PSM to assess the fatigue strength of arc-welded joints made of aluminium alloys or structural steels and subjected to uniaxial or multiaxial fatigue loads. The fatigue strength of welded steel details taken from industrial case studies is analysed according to the PSM. The case studies involve a roundabout-type carousel, a scotch-yoke valve actuator, a suspension for cableway vehicles and a sluice gate.

Abstract
In the fatigue design context of welded components, the peak stress method (PSM) is a FE-oriented, rapid application of the approach based on notch stress intensity factors (NSIFs). This chapter provides a theoretical background of the PSM to assess the fatigue strength of arc-welded joints made of aluminium alloys or structural steels and subjected to uniaxial or multiaxial fatigue loads. The fatigue strength of welded steel details taken from industrial case studies is analysed according to the PSM. The case studies involve a roundabout-type carousel, a scotch-yoke valve actuator, a suspension for cableway vehicles and a sluice gate.Pubblicazioni consigliate
