Responsibility, Technology and Innovation: The Recognition of a Capable Agent

Par II concludes with Chapter 10, in which Guido Gorgoni and Robert Gianni resort to Ricoeur’s notion of responsibility to frame a new approach to responsibility in technological innovation. According to the authors, Ricoeur’s contribution is important because he reconnects responsibility to the semantics of moral imputation, therefore regaining the sense of the connection between the agent and the action more than that of the attribution of its (typically negative) consequences. Responsibility in technological innovation is not just about a correct procedures and robust and trustworthy technological devices; it is also about personal commitment, towards oneself and the others.
