This book represents a rare case of a strict collaboration between a historian of medicine (FB), a physician involved in clinical practice (MC), and a physician and researcher who has been the protagonist of the discovery of the nature and role of the myofibroblast (GG), which is the main focus of this historical and biological perspective. At the same time, it represents a likewise rare case of combination between ancient and contemporary history. The aim of this book is to present the reader with the historical background in which the main concepts that are the object of our work, i.e., the fibrosis and the myofibroblast, have emerged. Moreover, it wishes to illustrate the biological significance of these concepts for diagnosis, clinical management, and possible therapeutic strategies of several widespread diseases, such as fibromatoses and organ fibroses. We hope that these aims will meet, at least in part, the interest of readers with different scientific and clinical backgrounds.
