Weighty edition of regional documents, the Codex diplomaticus Langobardiae run the risk for a long time of becoming a sum of several special collections of charters, a simple juxtaposition of municipal collections of documents mixed with other typologies of local written sources. Instead, a0er a long process of preparation (lasted about thirteen years), it represented the !nal conclusion of the 18th century erudite tradition. Criticizable (and often criticized) for its not impeccable philological quality, it should be considered anyway a work of great importance in a historiographical view: a typical product of the new Risorgimento historiography, with the evident ambition of bringing again on the national scene the Lombard legacy and the Lombard region
