Transparency refers to the accuracy and extensiveness of the information provided to readers about the research process and the presentation of its results in a scientific publication. It is a key element both for qualitative and quantitative research design. This entry first explains how the relationship between transparency and scientific ethos has been addressed by positivism and hermeneutics, the two main paradigms in the social sciences. Second, it highlights the uneven development of the debate about transparency in different disciplines. Finally, this entry considers the issue of transparency from the perspective of scientific publications.
