La primera traducción impresa completa de la Eneida de Virgilio realizada por Gregorio Hernández de Velasco

In this thesis we deal with the the first complete Spanish translation of Virgil's Aeneid. The translation was done by a priest, Gregorio Hernández de Velasco and published in 1555 (known as the "Text A") The work is divided into two parts: In the first appears biography and the analysis of the works of the Spanish translator (the translation of the Lagrime di San Pietro by Louis Tansillo, the translation of De partu Virginis by Jacopo Sannazzaro and finally the only original composition La Selva de Aranjuez); In the second part of the study appears Aeneid. The work at the time was a best-seller (or steady-sellers would say John Steinberg) and after 7 reprints came out in 1574 a second edition in 1577 and the final version (B and C respectively). They were examined and cataloged in detail the more than 20 editions have survived until today (10 in the 16th century, 5 in the 18th, and 5 in the 20th); it appears the transcription of the full text of the three versions and the variations in the various fields, metric (blanck verse vs. octaves with elimination of the proparoxitone and oxitone verses), lexical (elimination of latinisms in the more recent versions e.g.: E8, 967 aruspicina → Ø; E5, 1347 conseso → concilio; E10, 489 ignipotente → que en fuego tiene le mando; E1, 1113, E3,312 íncolas → gentes; E10, 351 inexhaustas → abundosas; E3, 424 infestar → Ø; E1, 742 pálido → fea amarillez; E10, 943 período → temporada; E5, 289 repagulo → Ø), morphological (variants imperfect and conditional -ié → -ía- that constitute a real gauge), etc. This work shows for the first time three different versions (and not two as wrongly considered from Menéndez Pelayo and followers). They have been highlighted some loci selecti that identify the edition of the Latin text below.

In questa tesi si tratta della prima traduzione spagnola completa a stampa dell’Eneide di Virgilio. La traduzione fu eseguita da un sacerdote, Gregorio Hernández de Velasco e pubblicata nel 1555 (indicata come testo A). Il lavoro si divide in due parti: nella prima compare la biografia e la rassegna delle opere del traduttore spagnolo (la traduzione delle Lagrime di San Pietro di Luigi Tansillo, la traduzione del De partu Virginis di Jacopo Sannazaro e, infine l’unica sua composizione originale La Selva de Aranjuez); nella seconda parte compare lo studio dell’Eneide. L’opera all’epoca fu un best-sellers (o steady-sellers come direbbe John Steinberg) e dopo 7 ristampe uscì nel 1574 una seconda redazione e nel 1577 la redazione definitiva (B e C rispettivamente). Sono state esaminate e schedate minuziosamente le più di 20 edizioni sopravvissute fino ad oggi (10 del Cinquecento, 5 del Settecento e 5 del Novecento); ha trascritto il testo completo delle tre redazioni e ne ha studiato le varianti nei vari campi, metrico (endecasillabo sciolto vs ottava rima con eliminazione dei versi sdruccioli e tronchi), lessicale (eliminazione dei latinismi nelle revisioni successive p. es.: E8, 967 aruspicina → Ø; E5, 1347 conseso → concilio; E10, 489 ignipotente → que en fuego tiene le mando; E1, 1113, E3,312 íncolas → gentes; E10, 351 inexhaustas → abundosas; E3, 424 infestar → Ø; E1, 742 pálido → fea amarillez; E10, 943 período → temporada; E5, 289 repagulo → Ø), morfologico (varianti imperfetto e condiz. -ié → -ía- che costituiscono un vero e proprio indicatore temporale), ecc. Si è scoperta la presenza di tre redazioni differenti (e non due come erroneamente ritenuto fino ad ora da Menéndez Pelayo e seguaci). Sono stati evidenziati alcuni loci selecti che permettono di individuare l’edizione del testo latino sottostante.
