This essay examines how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected immigrant workers’ employment in the United States. It concludes that foreign-born laborers were more vulnerable to dismissal, due to the coronavirus-induced economic crisis, and have been slower to be rehired, during the following recovery, than native workers, although many newcomers operated in critical sectors. The fact that they were less likely to hold jobs that could be performed from remote locations accounted in part for the immigrants’ disproportionate employment losses. In addition, those who have managed to retain their positions have been subjected to more hazardous working conditions.

Abstract

This essay examines how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected immigrant workers’ employment in the United States. It concludes that foreign-born laborers were more vulnerable to dismissal, due to the coronavirus-induced economic crisis, and have been slower to be rehired, during the following recovery, than native workers, although many newcomers operated in critical sectors. The fact that they were less likely to hold jobs that could be performed from remote locations accounted in part for the immigrants’ disproportionate employment losses. In addition, those who have managed to retain their positions have been subjected to more hazardous working conditions.
