Playback is a ubiquitous technique for the controlled manipulation and presentation of animal signals, and has become an invaluable tool in the study of animal communication. Playback stimuli can be manipulated or unmanipulated samples of natural signals, or they can be mathematically constructed de novo based on models of signal structure or signal production. Acoustic playbacks have a lengthy history in both laboratory and field studies of diverse taxa, while vibrational and electrical playbacks have been conducted in the laboratory on a small number of species. The scope of video and multimodal playbacks continues to expand in concert with available technology. The external validity of playback studies depends on both adequate sampling of signal space (avoiding pseudoreplication) and on faithfully representing the signal to a receiver.
