In this essay the aim is to assess al-Fārābī’s knowledge of De Caelo. Ancient lists of his works mention his commentary on Aristotle’s cosmological work, but this is unfortunately lost to us. We can only detect hints to this Aristotelian work in al-Fārābī’s original writings, and employ them to address some questions: did al-Fārābī access De Caelo in its entirety? Did he focus on some of the doctrinal issues discussed in that work? Was his reading of De Caelo accompanied by some ancient or late-antique exegetical commentary?

Abstract

In this essay the aim is to assess al-Fārābī’s knowledge of De Caelo. Ancient lists of his works mention his commentary on Aristotle’s cosmological work, but this is unfortunately lost to us. We can only detect hints to this Aristotelian work in al-Fārābī’s original writings, and employ them to address some questions: did al-Fārābī access De Caelo in its entirety? Did he focus on some of the doctrinal issues discussed in that work? Was his reading of De Caelo accompanied by some ancient or late-antique exegetical commentary?
