Given the fact that al-Fārābī most likely had only partial and mediated knowledge of the De Caelo, the aim of this paper is to determine which version of the Farabian cosmology might be called the ‘standard’ one when examining his mature works, such as Mabādiʾ ārāʾahl al-madīna al-fāḍila (Principles of the Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City) and the treatise, al-Siyāsa al-madaniyya (The Political Regime), also known under the title, Mabādiʾ al-mawǧūdāt (The Principles of Beings).

Abstract

Given the fact that al-Fārābī most likely had only partial and mediated knowledge of the De Caelo, the aim of this paper is to determine which version of the Farabian cosmology might be called the ‘standard’ one when examining his mature works, such as Mabādiʾ ārāʾahl al-madīna al-fāḍila (Principles of the Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City) and the treatise, al-Siyāsa al-madaniyya (The Political Regime), also known under the title, Mabādiʾ al-mawǧūdāt (The Principles of Beings).
