In this chapter I will consider the Verb Second (V2) system of Old Italian (OI) and analyze it as a “pragmatic” type of V2, as I already proposed in Poletto (2014): in OI the V2 structure must not only obey the purely syntactic restriction of occupying the CP layer but also pragmatic conditions requiring that the elements in the CP can only have a specific pragmatic function that is imposed by the organization of information structure, mirrored in the layering of the left periphery itself.

Abstract
In this chapter I will consider the Verb Second (V2) system of Old Italian (OI) and analyze it as a “pragmatic” type of V2, as I already proposed in Poletto (2014): in OI the V2 structure must not only obey the purely syntactic restriction of occupying the CP layer but also pragmatic conditions requiring that the elements in the CP can only have a specific pragmatic function that is imposed by the organization of information structure, mirrored in the layering of the left periphery itself.File in questo prodotto:
