The sustainable recovery of the existing building stock, as part of a regenerative urban process, is an opportunity to regain possession of large spaces, which are unused, abandoned and/ or left in decay. The aim of this work is to illustrate the strategies adopted in the project for the enhancement and renovation of the Palazzo del Turismo in the context of the archaeological excavations in Montegrotto Terme. The context includes an area that is part of a large spa (salus per aquam) complex dating back to the second half of the first century B.C. The methodological path carries out a preliminary analysis of the environmental context useful to identify the future intended use for the building, object of the intervention, in order to be sustainable from an economic point of view and compatible with the development of the territory. The presence of the archaeological area adjacent to the building has been a natural starting point and an important element for the development of the analysis and the related identification of the new intended use of the building, such a museum of archeology and school of restoration. On an urban scale, the project includes the building, the archaeological excavation area and the surrounding external areas and is integrated with the renovation project, already planned by the Municipality of Montegrotto, of Via della Stazione, which connects the railway station to the city centre. The intervention as a whole is an example of a process of urban regeneration. At the building scale, the next design phase, developed on the basis of sustainability criteria, identifies innovative solutions to be used in the recovery process. Overall, the criteria used for the methodological path, allow to grasp the dynamics that involve the aspects of design in function of the needs of economic and cultural revival both of the territory and the end users.
