Soviet science fiction of the 1920s, like all contemporary Soviet literature, was of an experimental nature. One of these experiments is the 1928 novel BESTSEREMONNYI ROMAN, which was written by three authors: Veniamin Kirshgorn, Iosif Keller and Georgii Lipatov. It was the first Russian alternative historical novel to use the motif of time travel and deliberate changes in history. The main character, Roman Vladychin, is trying to organize a world proletarian revolution during the Napoleonic wars. The experimental nature of the novel is consistently embodied at all levels: composition, style, chronotope, geopoetics, main and secondary characters, as well as the model of the relationships between humans and History. BESTSEREMONNYI ROMAN laid the foundations of the genre’s canon, which continues to be used in Russian literature today.
