Unknown pleasures. Una sociologia carnale sui percorsi di ascesi dei kinkster MSM

This research is an investigation of the sexual scripts of men who have sex with men (MSM) called ‘kinksters’. Kinky sexualities are effectively a sort of sexpositive lifestyle that can be defined as the contrary of the ‘vanilla’ sexuality, which is traditional, monogamic, romantic and oriented towards reproduction. In this contribution MSM’ kinks are divided into fetishisms, BDSM activities, raw intercourses and chemsex sex with chems, based on a literature review that, draws on what social actors consider as sexual pleasures in the kinky world. The approach of investigation of this particular subculture is the carnal sociology, that consists in studying the kinky habitus using the body of the scholar as an instrument for the research. The research methods that have characterized this approach were participant observation and 50 in-depth interviews to understand the sexual conducts of the kinky lifestyle. The geographical field has been set up mainly in some cities of Italy and also London and Berlin, where usually kinky parties take place. Using heuristic analogy, field notes and interviews have been analyzed as if the kinky phenomenon were a religious phenomenon. So, in this way some concepts have emerged as features of the kinky subculture: epiphanies, initiations, rituals, altered states of mind, sacred and profane borders and forms of transcendence. These elements can paint the kinky world as a post-secular implicit religion. This study reveals a different meaning of the kinky rituals: they are not only forms of pleasure, but also bodily ascents, seeking to improve the carnal and the psychic Self, through the repetition of certain technical exercises. Once kinksters progressively achieve step by step some state of the consciousness, as adults they finally discover again their “internal object”, lost because of the socialisation process. In the kinky world, kinkster train and build themself together, they learn how to live consciously, controlling the everyday life risk conditions, avoiding the sexual/ordinary split, understanding that what is in one sphere is also in the other.

La tesi indaga i copioni sessuali di alcuni uomini che fanno sesso con uomini (MSM) che si autodefiniscono kinkster. Sono considerate “kinky” tutte quelle forme di sessualità che si oppongono a quelle tradizionali, riproduttive e romantiche (cosiddette “vanilla”), e che costituiscono dei veri e propri lifestyle sexpositive. In questo contributo i kink degli MSM si possono dividere in feticismi, pratiche BDSM, sesso raw e chemsex, in base ai modi con cui, secondo la letteratura scientifica, gli attori sociali definiscono cosa sia per loro sessualmente appagante a livello sessuale. Si è deciso di studiare questa particolare subcultura attraverso l’approccio della sociologia carnale, ovvero utilizzando il corpo del ricercatore come mezzo di comprensione dell’habitus che soggiace alle condotte sessuali kinky. Gli strumenti che hanno caratterizzato questo approccio sono stati l’etnografia partecipante e le 50 interviste in profondità, avendo come luoghi di riferimento privilegiati alcune zone d’Italia e alcune città europee in cui si svolge la maggior parte degli eventi kinky, in particolare Londra e Berlino. Seguendo una euristica dell’analogia, note di campo e interviste sono state analizzate come se descrivessero un sistema religioso. Si sono studiati così le epifanie e le iniziazioni, i rituali, gli stati alterati della mente, i confini fra sacro e profano e le forme di trascendenza di quella che si può definire una forma di religiosità post-secolare implicita, ovvero la sub-cultura kinky. Lo studio rivela che i rituali kinky non sono solo espressioni di piacere, ma anche delle modalità di ascesi corporea, atte a migliorare, attraverso la ripetizione di esercizi tecnici il proprio Sé corporeo e psichico. Con il raggiungimento progressivo e sempre più frequente di alcuni stati di alterazione fisica e mentale i kinkster ritrovano da adulti il loro “oggetto interiore”, perduto con il processo di socializzazione; costruendo se stessi assieme ad altri kinkster, essi imparano a vivere consapevolmente e con un controllo sempre più raffinato la condizione di “rischio”, eludendo così la separazione fra vita sessuale e quotidianità, poiché ciò che riguarda una di queste sfere si ritrova anche nell’altra.
