A Sense of Time. Temporal Disorders and Distorted Sensitivity in Samuel Beckett and Wilfred Ruprecht Bion.

Revolving around the individual’s sense of temporality, the present study seeks to interrogate how time is perceived – or misperceived – by the self, and it investigates the representations of the time-mind and disordered sensitivities in the oeuvres of Samuel Beckett and Wilfred Ruprecht Bion. The opening chapter is devoted to an overview of the philosophical and clinical theories of the early 20th century and the modernist passion for time and the way it is perceived by the human mind. This first part is followed by a survey of the clinical relationship between Beckett and Bion and their proximity to time studies that were conducted in the first decades of the last century. In this frame, Wilfred R. Bion is not considered simply as Beckett’s psychoanalyst, but he is looked at mainly as the author of A Memoir of the Future, a trilogy in which Bion fictionalises parts of his life and his psychoanalytic thought. This introductory overview is followed by three chapters. The second chapter revolves around the phenomenology and representations of past time in the works of the two authors, and focuses on the mechanisms of memory, on the concept of trauma and on the notion of ‘ghost’, understood here as the product of a traumatised memory. The third chapter considers the phenomenology of future time and develops around the notions of human degeneration, desire and birth trauma. Lastly, the fourth chapter concentrates upon the concepts of timelessness and existential nothingness, analyses the representations of present time in Beckett’s and Bion’s oeuvres, and offers a reading of Beckett’s The Unnamable through Bion’s psychoanalytic theory of ‘O’.

Questo studio mira ad interrogare il modo in cui il tempo viene percepito dall'io e indaga le varie rappresentazioni del tempo nella mente nei lavori di Samuel Beckett e Wilfred Ruprecht Bion. Il primo capitolo è dedicato a una panoramica delle teorie filosofiche e cliniche del primo Novecento e alla passione modernista per il tempo e il modo in cui viene percepito dalla mente umana. Questa prima parte del capitolo è seguita da un'indagine sul rapporto clinico tra Beckett e Bion e sulla loro vicinanza agli studi sul tempo condotti nei primi decenni del secolo scorso. In questa cornice, Wilfred R. Bion non viene considerato semplicemente come lo psicoanalista di Beckett, ma viene preso in analisi soprattutto come l'autore di A Memoir of the Future, una trilogia in cui Bion romanza parti della sua vita e del suo pensiero psicoanalitico. A questa panoramica introduttiva seguono tre capitoli. Il secondo capitolo ruota attorno alla fenomenologia e alle rappresentazioni del tempo passato nelle opere dei due autori e si concentra sui meccanismi della memoria, sul concetto di trauma e sulla nozione di "fantasma", inteso qui come il prodotto di una memoria traumatizzata. Il terzo capitolo prende in considerazione la fenomenologia del tempo futuro e si sviluppa attorno alle nozioni di degenerazione umana, desiderio e trauma della nascita. Infine, il quarto capitolo si concentra sui concetti di atemporalità e di nulla esistenziale, analizza le rappresentazioni del tempo presente nelle opere di Beckett e di Bion e propone una lettura de L'innominabile di Beckett attraverso la teoria psicoanalitica dell'O di Bion.
